20 years ago, when my health problems started, I didn’t know how important food was to our health. Amazing, right? Something you do with your body every day, and I didn’t even start to read food labels till about 2007 when the health problems began to get more serious.
In 2014, when I was the sickest, I gave up being vegetarian in order to try the GAPS diet to help me recover. GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome. It was created by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride who had a daughter with learning disabilities. She recognized the link between food, the health of the gut, and brain function and came up GAPS.
It took a bit of a mind flip for me to start GAPS, especially because I didn’t eat meat, but it was one of the most important changes I made that helped me recover from Lyme & nanoparticle poisoning (that’s a different but related approach – read more about that here).
If you’re reading this, then I bet you’re dealing some kind of similar health problem that requires change.
You know you have to do something about it, right?
Some say it’s too hard to change their diet, but guess what?
It’s harder being sick all the time, so it’s worth your time & effort to give this a try.
In this article, I want to outline for you the three main elements of the GAPS diet for Lyme disease & autoimmune recovery. These conditions come with cognitive difficulty, headaches, & widespread pain, which are also related to gut health.
Firstly, what are some of the benefits of doing GAPS
- Eliminate brain fog
- Reduce pain
- More restful sleep
- Better memory
- Better absorption of nutrients, leading to the above & less need to eat constantly
Element #1: Bone & Meat Broth
These broths contain gelatin which heals the mucosal lining of the digestive tract & helps to regenerate cells.
Element #2: Fats
Fats satiate you & keep your blood sugar stable. They also help heal the gut lining.
Choose ones like butter, tallow, coconut, olive, or avocado oil, & ghee.
Element #3: Probiotic Foods
These will help replenish the healthy bacteria in the gut.
When you fix your gut, you fix your brain!
Choose ones like kefir, sauerkraut, yoghurt (with no additives), kvass, & kimchi.
