Compassion vs. Control: The Tragic Outcome at Universal Ostrich Farms

A Sad End

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been watching the unfolding of the situation at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, BC.

As an animal-lover and an empath, it upset me when videos came out of the CFIA hauling massive amounts of so-called garbage out of the farm. The suspicion was, of course, that they’d begun killing the birds, and this was prior to the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling that the birds indeed could be slaughtered.

Once the CFIA did get the go-ahead and their shooters began slaughtering the ostriches, videos of the family and supporters hit me even more. It took them 6 hours of nighttime shooting at these animals that were penned into a smaller area of the farm — not a humane way to kill animals (if there is even a humane way).

Some of you may say, “Who cares about the ostriches? F-them, this is just another distraction.”

My response is: Yes, it’s very distracting. It’s disturbing.

Abuse of power

I believe, as painful as it is to learn the facts, we should know about this because what it shows me is another example of a tyrannical government going way too far in their use and abuse of power.

One Rebel News reporter stated that she believed that the CFIA had gone so far in the case that it got to a point where if they backed down, they would be seen as giving in. They had to save face & wield their power no matter how many laws they were breaking, including animal cruelty laws.

She may have been right. However, perhaps the situation would not have gone this far if the farm was not in contract with the government. If they were operating in the private, I’m sure it would have turned out differently. However, they were not, and they were engaged with the CFIA and the CFIA ran the show. They care only about their contracts, not about life, and they went ahead and slaughtered the birds and psychologically tortured everyone on that farm anyway.

After the killing was done, Ezra Levant & Drea Humphrey interviewed the family again, post-massacre. A comment by one of the farm owners, Dave Bilinski, caught my attention.

He said that one of the hardest parts of the ordeal was that people offered to “take physical action” against the CFIA and RCMP (read between the lines – violence, guns, etc.). The culling could have been stopped in that way. However, they refused. If they’d retaliated with violence, you know it would have ended in arrests and more violence, something the RCMP had been provoking especially during the night of the cull. They would have had all they needed to paint the family and their supporters as terrorists. Ironic, isn’t it?

Hypocrisy

It reminds me of a couple of kids in elementary school — those same losers who accused you of doing the thing they were actually guilty of. I guess those kids grow up to be people who work in the CFIA other alphabet agencies.

Poor sport

As I watched this go down, one part of me said, Why aren’t they fighting back?! Canadians are so weak — in other countries, the people would rise up against these thugs!

Easy for me to think at first. However, I understand their decision to hold back and I congratulate the family for turning down the option to retaliate physically. They stood in honour even in the face of evil.

You can watch this video to get a review of what occurred and what the family has been up to in the past couple of weeks since they lost their ostrich flock.
